Quality Assurance

The first step in assuring quality is choosing a suitable translator. If the translation is bad, editors can’t do much – or they will have to spend a really long time rewriting! So we take a really responsible approach to cooperation with translators. You can rest assured that all of our specialists:

  •         Have relevant qualifications and skills proved by documents
  •         Constantly receive positive feedback from our customers and editors
  •         Take an effort to engage in professional development
  •         Regularly take an in-house challenge by submitting their work for a peer review
  •         Are disciplined enough to keep within the deadlines and guidelines provided to them by companies or editors

However, editing work is just as important, so the text is then sent to the editor. Why do you need to pay the editor if the translator can produce high-quality text? Well, remember large publishing houses. Even the best writers who can serve the icons of style submit their work to editors! One person can hardly produce an excellent text – well, just because the human attention span is limited.

The third step is proofreading, which puts the final tick to prove the text’s quality.

The gold standard of the translation industry, the three-stage text processing, usually works quite well, producing excellent results. And this is the approach we at HumanTranslation strictly follow in our daily routine.

Language Facts

  •         The first mention of Croatian as a language dates back to 1275. Today, it is the language of about 7 million people.
  •         In 1847, Croatian was about to become an extinct language as everyone around spoke Latin. The Croatian Parliament made a historical decision then to make Croatian a national language.
  •         There are 3 dialects that are further subdivided into seven ones! These differ in vocabulary: some borrowed a lot from Italian, while others – from German and Hungarian, for instance.
  •         We all know one Croatian word that was borrowed by the majority of languages without translation, and this is “paprika”.
  •         Are you blond(e)? Don’t be surprised if you are described as “blue-haired” in Croatian: that’s just the way they see you!
  •         You would be surprised to know that there is one Croatian word that has a plethora of synonyms, and this is a corn cob(!).
  •         Croatian is rich in swear words, and the nation is very creative with them.
  •         You will really enjoy learning how to read in Croatian: the words are written as they are pronounced.
  •         If you know Croatian, you will also understand Bosnian, Serbian, and Montenegrin.

Language Tips:

The document you are translating is hardly the first company document translated into that language. It means that the company has a voice and tone peculiar to its brand identity. Some companies provide guidelines, while others don’t. Anyway, they will greatly appreciate it if you read at least something they publish online, do your translation consistently, and point it out to the customer (or even note the tone inconsistencies you’ve found). You may get a loyal customer for the rest of your life! Anyway, this is not a tip on how to get customers, but on how to do your work with high quality in mind.

When you read tips for translators, you are often advised to be concise. Anyway, this is not a tip to be taken literally. On the one hand, you have to balance between the dry and flowery way of expression. On the other hand, sentences sometimes remind fillers inserted into the text just to make it longer – and if you try to make them concise, you suddenly find that there is no thought left to be expressed… And you have to write something in your CAT tool box. What can you do in this case? Well, you have the context. Add some thought here from above or below text, and you will kill two birds with one stone: stay concise and meaningful.
