Make sure the client mentions the target audience as you will have to choose between Canadian French and European French.
Before you start translating, ask yourself what the purpose of the document is:
=> If this is a product article, the focus is on keeping the reader’s interest in the product (he
should hardly notice the language itself, let alone stumble in some places).
=> If this is a legal text, the focus is on accuracy, clarity, and making sure that you take into
account the peculiarities of the two legal systems.
=> If this is a literary piece, you can draw attention to the language and its play on words – but
not to the detriment of clarity and depicting the characters in a peculiar way, for instance.
