- Most people heard that Hungarian is a very hard language to learn, and it is true. It occupies a place in the top 10 most complicated languages in the world and very few people who started learning it actually come to the end.
- Hungarian is the mother tongue of nearly 13 million people, but there is a danger that this number may dwindle considerably as people (even inside Hungary) switch to an easier option of speaking English and giving their children an education in English.
- There are two words to denote a red color in Hungarian, and it is not always clear which one to choose!
- When the Hungarians introduce themselves, the last name comes first and the first name comes second. Remember this fact not to refer to them by surname, though they are used to this common mistake and will not be offended!
- The Hungarian language is actually called “Magyar”, and many people refer to it this way when they don’t care about its association with a particular country.
- The word order in the Hungarian language is quite flexible, though not absolutely free. But anyway, it is not as strict as English, and most words can change their places.
Language Tips:
Hungarian vowels can be long and short. The first trick during translation is to avoid mixing them up as they are pronounced similarly.
The eastern way means that the last name comes first and the first name comes second. When you translate a Hungarian full name into foreign languages, follow the western order: put the name first and the last name second. However, when you translate a foreign name into Hungarian, retain the original order and do not try to “localize’ it in a Hungarian manner.
The Hungarian language boasts about 1,000,000 words! And you probably understand that an average native speaker would not use them all properly and skillfully. However, words tend to be grouped in association with a certain area of knowledge, and this is exactly what you need.
