Language Facts
- Lithuanian language is not very widespread: in fact, there are only three million speakers.
- If a woman gets married, a special ending is added to her surname if she chooses to take her husband’s name. The tradition is slowly dying as more and more women prefer independence, but it is still there.
- Popular Lithuanian names are often connected with nature: in ancient times, it was common to name children after beautiful flowers and trees.
- Lithuanian is one of the most ancient living languages in the world, with some words even having Sanskrit origin.
- Lithuanian language and alphabet were undergoing hard times from the end of the 18th century to the start of the 1900s when the country was under the rule of the Russian Empire. The local alphabet was banned, and books had to be smuggled. And still, the language survived quite successfully.
- If you begin learning any language by bad words, look elsewhere: the Lithuanian does not have them! If Lithuanians really want to express their bad mood, they use Russian words instead.
Language Tips:
When you translate idioms, the most readily-available piece of advice is to skip them altogether and just translate the meaning. However, if you think that the text will look too dull this way, look at the role of the idiom in the text. In what way does it make it brighter? Was the original intention to amuse, to come closer to the reader, or just to make the text beautiful and “flowery”? If you know the intention, you can do the same to your text in the target language.
If you see that the text is based on humor, colloquial language, or any play on words, give it out for transcreation. This is not a translator’s work, to be honest.
Translators typically have problems with date formats… And these are easily curtailed by just writing it in full: October 23rd, 2023. Any international reader will understand you!
If a word can imply two meanings in a sentence, clarify the context. English phrasal verbs, for instance, can be fantastically polysemantic! Avoid that. The first thing your reader needs is clarity.
