- The Poles try not to borrow too many foreign words, and they translate nearly everything into Polish. A well-known example is the international “football” that sounds like piłka nożna (foot and ball, too, but translated into Polish).
- Polish pronunciation is notoriously difficult, and there are a lot of tongue twisters that foreigners find impossible to pronounce at first.
- Want to see the longest Polish word? Here it is: Dziewięćsetdziewięćdziesięciodziewięcionarodowościowego. It means “of 999 nationalities” and looks really scary for Polish language beginners.
- If you have mastered Polish, you will also understand Czech, Slovak, and Serbian, and it will be much easier to understand some other Slavonic languages.
- Use Pan (Sir) and Pani (Miss) in everyday speech to sound courteous (even though just a little bit old-fashioned).
Language Tips:
Keep your ideas clear. One sentence – one thought. Translators do get fuzzy original texts to translate, and they have to do an additional job of polishing them. But the resulting text should be structured enough to keep the roaming attention of information-overwhelmed people.
Be attentive to cultural differences. If you need to translate something like “an ordinary guy called John”, you will refer to an English guy if you leave the name “John”. However, if you need an ordinary Polish guy, you’d better call him Piotr. And though the example may seem too simple, such details sometimes spoil the translation that may look good in all other aspects.
How to translate jokes into another language? The best answer is: to skip them. It takes a deep knowledge of the cultural context to strike the same chords, and this should be done at the stage of localization and transcreation, not translation per se. In most cases, you are not translating the materials related to country studies (in which case we do translate the joke as an important cultural element and explain it if necessary). If the joke is there to make the text less dull, then make it less dull in another way.
